You can turn your Nintendo Wii into a personal entertainment system. You’ve seen those Wii Channels everytime you start on the Wii Start Page, right? Well, they’re called channels for a reason. Check this out…

You can download games, music, TV shows, movies, and more. If you’re using the Wii Fit… I mean… do you really want to listen to that cheesy music being played in the background? I don’t. Especially that music in the Aerobics games. (The one exception for me is the Hoola Hoop music for some reason… weird, I know.)

Anyway, I was at a friend’s house and we were talking about the strategies for getting a higher rank (more coming in a future post). Then, something weird happened…

My friend was playing against the Wii opponents (I wasn’t playing with or against him). He sort of spiked the ball at an angle toward the left side of the court, just near the net. The computer opponent jumped really high to get the ball off the bounce… They hit it back, but they ended up in the stands. And the other Wii opponent had to play the remainder of the volley alone, while the first one was trapped in the stands.

Some of the best best games to play are Nintendo’s own efforts such as Wii Sports, Wii Fit
and the recently released Wii Music. Each is fun, bright and easy to get the hang of right away, using simple motion controls for almost every action. The good thing about these games and many of the other’s to be mentioned is that they are as much fun for adults and grandparents to play, even without the kids!

On the third party side of things, one of the best games comes from a somewhat unusual source. Stephen Speilberg, ace Hollywood director, has put his hand into creating on of the best family games on the market – Boom Blox. With a basic concept similar to Jenga but so much more, Boom Blox is easy to pick and play but as with most good games, is hard to master.

Another, more left field option, this time from Canadian developers Ubisoft, is Rayman Raving Rabbids. A fast paced, mini-game filled, over the top type of game featuring mad rabbits setting Rayman various challenges. All of these games are fun and again easy to pick up and play. Still with Rayman, the sequel to Raving Rabbids, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, will make use of the Wii Balanced board bundled with Wii Fit and will be used in an ingenious way. Your butt. Yes, you control various mini-games with your butt in the same fast paced and fun environment. Obviously there is an option to just use the normal Wii remote controls, but I believe if you ask anyone, young or old if they’d like to control a game with their butt, the answer would be pretty unanimous.

For a more traditional family gaming experience, look no further than the LEGO game series. Already in it’s third edition, you now have the choice of either LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, LEGO Indiana Jones or LEGO Batman. These games bring top class platform and exploration gameplay to fore, and whole movie scripts and scenes played out all in glorious LEGO brick. With three great franchises behind these games there’s a lot to love about them, from recreating the battle of Hoth in Star Wars to running away from “that” boulder in Indiana Jones. Be warned however, that as soon as you have put your kids to bed you’ll be up playing this yourself as the hundreds of unlockable characters and items will keep you coming back for more.

With that said, the Nintendo Wii is the platform of choice for families, and, if you are worried about a games content make sure to check the PEGI rating on the box, or ask one of those friendly game store clerks.

Wii (Nintendo)

The Wii has so many different random add-ons, most of which are different types of replica sports equipment to stick on to the Wii remote. Now while these are all well and good, they aren’t exactly essential. What is essential is a charger kit for your Wii remotes. Numerous companies such as 4Gamers and Nyko make these invaluable accessories, because as anyone who owns a Wii knows, the remotes rapidly drain their batteries.

Also if you have a TV that can take component connections, it is best to invest in a set of component cables as the graphics will be significantly improved. So an accessory which makes sure you’ve always got juice to play your games and one that makes them look a bit better – effective, yes. Fun? No not really.

For fun you need to look no further than Nintendo’s own range of game specific add-ons such as Wii Balance Board and the Wireless Steering Wheel. The peripherals are as you’d expect fantastically made and awesome fun. The only real downside is that they cost a bit and there is limited use for them outside the games they come bundled with (Wii Fit and Mario Kart respectively).

Xbox 360 (Microsoft)

The Xbox 360 has a few really essential accessories which (most people think) really should have been included in the console box itself. Things such as the “Play and Charge Kit” and the wireless adapter are for quite a few people greatly needed. Aside from these two things, the other things you may need are extra controllers and more chargeable battery packs.

Obviously there are some well publicized 3rd party extras and games such as the venerable Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises now featuring guitars, microphones and drums! One really good homegrown Microsoft add-on you can get is the snappily titled “Official Xbox 360 Wireless Steering Wheel with Force Feedback“. Great on racing games such as Forza 2 or Project Gotham Racing 4
, full force feedback and the great build quality which comes from a Microsoft original.

Playstation 3 (Sony)

The PS3 doesn’t have a huge amount of peripherals at hand and most are replacements for the stock HDMI cables. Now, as the PS3 does come with a blue ray drive, the large amount of cables on offer will appeal to the home theatre nut who decided they couldn’t wait for a stand alone player to be released. Obviously there are your normal add-ons such as game pads and headsets for talking to your friends over the PSN, but one accessory you may not have considered is a wireless keyboard. Now, this may seem a bit odd to get for a games console but because of the well functioning web browser included on the PS3, and if you are in the situation where you household PC/laptop is shared this might be a good idea.
