Tips on Buying Used PS3 Games

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

by Wesley E Anderson

Ps3 is one of the hottest consoles in the video game world today. If you have a PS3, you know what I am talking about. There are many games out there that can entertain you to the fullest. However, most of these games are very expensive. Some games range anywhere from 50-60 dollars. This is not the way that you want to enjoy your gaming; broke. You want to get the best deal that you can find on the web or online.

I will go over how you can get the deal that you are looking for offline and online. If you are ever going to get a deal offline, you will want to go to the local flee market. This is where you can either find deals that are at least 3-4 dollars below the retail but you can also negotiate a deal with them as well. You will want to try to get them to give you a lower price. First try and see if you can get them to get you a deal 2 dollars lower than the asking price. If you can, try to get lower. If they are not going to get you a deal at that flee market, then you will want to visit another flee market and see if you can negotiate a deal there.

If you are going to look online, then you will want to find the game that you are looking for and compare it with other sites online. This way you can determine which deal is the best.

How To Copy A PS3 Game

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

After reading the Wii Backup post from a couple weeks back, many have been wondering how to make the PS3 game disc backups. Well, I found another useful article with links that follow it…

How to Copy A PS3 Game

by Jamie Harding (used with permission from EzineArticles.com)

If you are reading this article then it’s obvious that you are an avid gamer and Playstation 3 owner and as an owner of Playstation 3 games you know how costly and yet fragile they are. This is the main reason why a lot of game console owners want to know how to copy a PS3 game. Luckily due to some bright sparks around the place it’s actually not that difficult and in this article I will give you a brief outline of what is involved.

Firstly you are going to need your Playstation 3 game that you are intending to backup. In addition you will need a PC with the appropriate burner and software and lastly the DVD or media that you intend burning the backup to.

The process itself is very simple. Grab your favorite game, put it into your PC drive and then launch the software that you intend to grab the data files of the game disk. Now there are various free software solutions that you can download and install to your PC that will easily read the files and store them to your PC, although as far as I am aware there are no free software solutions that provide an all in one click and copy feature. There however paid software applications that basically let you put your game disk in and then you launch the software; it then does the rest and tells you when to insert the blank disk so that it can burn it for you. While I prefer the paid version you can opt of the free version if you don’t mind downloading 3-4 software applications instead.

The longest process is the actual reading of the original game as this can take quite a while depending on your PC processor and the amount of RAM that is has available. Once however the files are successfully on your PC then you will be prompted to insert a blank disk if using an all in one software solution or if you are using the free option you may have to launch your next piece of software.

Basically that is how to copy a PS3 game; it’s not too difficult whether you go the free or paid solution.

If you would like to find out more about one click software solutions that show you how to copy a PS3 game then visit the site below.

The Best Games for PlayStation 3 (PS3)

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

The Sony PlayStation 3 is arguably the most powerful home console ever made and as expected the games at the top end of the scale have not disappointed. With beautiful full HD graphics, compelling stories and some unique experiences, the PS3 has firmly staked it’s place in history as one of the best consoles of all time.

One of the most important and most anticipated game on the PS3 was the ever popular franchise Metal Gear Solid. In it’s fourth iteration on the PS3, the game had huge demand before any details were released and it’s large fan-base were clamoring for information. Released worldwide in June 2008 to critical acclaim the game became the PS3s best selling game in a few short weeks of release.

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth-based action game, heavy on cut scene and a twisting turning plot. It was these last two points which were expanded upon in MGS4, with cut scenes at some points running to over an hour at times and the plot being even more extravagant than previous games. With some of the best graphics ever seen on a home console and a lengthy campaign to boot, head developer Hideo Kojima stated that they nearly ran out of space on the PS3s huge blue ray discs which themselves total up to 50gbs each. However, when playing the game and being immersed in the story and those cut scenes, you can see why.

To all intents and purposes the game lived up the fans and critics high expectations, quickly being denoted as the best of the Metal Gear series and as a must buy for any self respecting PS3 owner.

A game which is completely at the opposite end of the scale from MGS4 is that of Pixel Junk Eden, a game available only on the Playstation Network. A game of simple graphics and gameplay but in some ways more addictive and ultimately satisfying than it’s “on disc”, big budget cousins. In the game players control a small creature called a Grimp who using a seris of jumping and swinging skills must collect objects called “spectra”, essentially pollen to grow flowers from seeds dotted around each garden or level. The game is played on a two dimensional plane and each level is simple yet beautiful in it’s art direction, each garden becoming more colorful as more flowers are grown.

The game shows how amazing simple and affordable games can be, and also what a great delivery system the PSN and its Xbox 360 and Wii equivalents can be for games like this.

One game on the PS3 has shown how to tell a compelling and unique story the best, and that game is BioShock. Set in the underwater city of Rapture, you play a airplane crash victim who finds his way there out of sheer luck, or in some cases you would call it misfortune. As the game progresses you are led through different areas of rapture by a distant voice on your radio located somewhere else in Rapture and through logs picked up along the way with chilling stories of what happened in the now derelict city.

One of the most striking things about BioShock is it’s amazing art direction. With a 1950s art deco look, the world of Rapture is stunning and at the same time incredibly creepy and atmospheric, and that’s before you meet any enemies. Most of the “bad guys” in BioShock are deformed or mutated citizens of the once glorious habitat under the sea, but your main and most dangerous foes are those of the “Big Daddies”. The game features a substance called ADAM which is in most cases gained from either rescuing or killing creatures called “Little Sisters”, who are protected by the near indestructible “Big Daddies”.

BioShock is a game of twists and turns which will keep you on your toes all the way to the end, and the PS3 edition is set to have new downloadable content released to further the enjoyment of the game. Careful though… it’s rated M for Mature.

Great Games You May Have Missed

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

With huge amount of games coming out these days there are always going to be some that you miss. Now, some of these are probably best missed but in the heap there are always a few gems.

First among these may be considered an odd choice as it’s more of an anthology of a series, but Metal Slug Anthology on Wii should not be missed by any action fans. Featuring 8 different games, the whole of the Metal Slug arcade and console series is here to play either by yourself, or the much more enjoyable way – with friends, as each game does feature a full co-op mode.

The basic premise of the game is simple, a two dimensional scrolling shoot em up featuring over the top weaponry and brilliant cartoon animation. You play one of four soldiers, who with the help of the occasional tank, the aptly named Metal Slugs of the game, fighting your way through different levels and locales taking on ridiculous amounts of enemy troops along the way.

The game has it’s tongue firmly in it’s cheek all the way through. Nothing is serious, with numerous comical set pieces throughout each level, and to keep the ride flowing smoothly there is of course the inevitable arrow telling you to move on to the next section, just like all good side scrollers.

If your a Xbox 360, one game you probably missed at the time was Just Cause. The game is set on a lush Caribbean island where you are special agent Luis Rodrigez, sent to stop the corrupt government. Now it doesn’t sound that great from that brief synopsis, but the game is so much more than that. The game follows the ideas behind Grand Theft Auto and runs with them. The island you call home is basically a huge sandbox of sun, sea and sand and the 360′s graphical power is used well to show it off. With an incredible draw distance and the ability to take a helicopter far into the sky, the game definitely looks impressive.

The game does have some significant flaws such as a repetitive mission structure and less than brilliant AI from your enemies, but the main reason to play this game is for the sheer fun of it. The first time you tak that helicopter up in the air and skydive from it’s highest points is one of the most satisfying game experiences you can have. That’s right, you can skydive. Anytime. Also you are automatically equipped with a grappling which can be used to latch of to other vehicles including planes and helicopters and this results in some of the most over the top stunts you can imagine.

A very fun game, if you ignore the main story for the most part.

The PS3 hasn’t got one of the most extensive libraries out there but that hasn’t stopped some games being lost in the pile. One game that you really should play, whether your a fan of the genre of not, is Skate. At first glance it looks like a Tony Hawk clone, but the game is so much more than that. The game features a unique control system for a skateboarding game: all main controls are mapped the the right analog stick. This mechanic makes sure that the game is a lot more realistic to real life skateboarding and in some of it’s challenges, nearly as tough.

In the game you create your own character and start off as a street punk trying to get themselves noticed and become a pro-skater. Through various challenges you’ll meet new people, earn respect and get yourself in magazines and videos, eventually leading to your invite to X Games: the skateboarding olympics.

A whole city is mapped out in glorious HD graphics and the attention to details i if you will s fantastic, with even the cracks in the road being visible. Also that unusual control scheme works wonders and really sets this game apart from the rest. If you haven’t played it, you should.

Family Games for PlayStation 3 (PS3)

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The PlayStation 3 (like the Xbox 360) does have an image of being only for older gamers, but there are several family-friendly titles out there for you to put on your radar screen. Let’s review two of them…

Rachet & Clank Future

The first of these would the fantastic platforming action of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. The PS3′s premier platforming game has been critically acclaimed as the best in the series so far and boasts all the usual things you get from a PS3 titles – such as HD graphics and high presentation values. But, thankfully, it also manages to be a game nearly all ages can enjoy. The game follows the exploits of Ratchet a Lombax mechanic and his trusty robot sidekick Clank. The game features crazy weaponry a good sense of humor and great level design, all things which have become a hallmark of the series.

For this PS3 iteration the game has, of course, had the expected update in the looks department, but also uses the capacity of the PS3s Blue-Ray disc drive to create bigger environments and stunning locales. At the heart of the matter the game is fun in it’s truest sense and should appeal to everyone.

One of the most anticipated games for the PS3 and generally any console has been Little Big Planet (LBP). The game is on first glance could be shrugged off as a nice looking and cute two dimensional platformer but the game’s real selling point is the fact that it’s basically a huge sandbox to play in.

Players are given total freedom to create levels and even whole game’s if they like using LBP’s special “rope and pulley” building mechanic. Basically anything sort of thing, from cars to calculators can be created using ropes, string, wood and cogs. Of course to create complicated things, it will take a lot of time and some planning, however if you just want a fun game to play about with and help bring out your kids creativity you could do no better. You only need to take a look on YouTube to see the huge amount of things already created by other players if you need any inspiration.

If the variety of player made ideas on both YouTube and the PSN don’t help you think of anything to make LBP also comes with a full single player game where you take control of Sackboy, the game’s main character and what may become the PS3′s new mascot in time, to run through a series of unique and really special platforming levels. The most amazing thing about the single player game, is that every level has been crafted using the game’s editor itself, with only certain complicated things being independently made by the developers.

The true scope for fun and creativity is overwhelming and I’m sure any family would have a great time spending hours creating and playing on all sorts of different levels and contraptions. A sure thing if ever there was one.

Games You Should Avoid for PS3, Wii, or Xbox

Monday, November 17th, 2008

There are many games that people like to call, “must have”, but what I’d like to focus on now though, are those special games which plumb the depths of awfulness – those with a certain quality that sets them apart. Now, of course there have been thousands of terrible games over the past two decades of modern gaming, but let’s look at games for the current generation of consoles, and specifically those that were released with quite a bit of hype.

Playstation 3 (Sony) Game To Avoid: Haze

The PS3, even though it has only been out for just over a year now, has had it’s fair share of mediocre titles, and a good few which hit our hype laden criteria. The first of these was a very widely advertised and highly sought game at the time of release, but after the first set of reviews, it’s lacking nature was shown to the world.

The game in question is Haze. Haze, a game about a stereotypical conflict between large faceless corporation and small band of rebels fighting for freedom – think Star Wars with less scope and you have the idea. The “mechanic” for the game is the soldier enhancing drug Nectar. The corporation troops use this to turn themselves into super soldier killing machines, but, to keep things nice and balanced of course these troops can overdose and kill their friends – shock horror.

With the tawdry story out of the way the game was hyped as the next best first person shooter, with great AI, cool weapons and fantastic explosive action! It turned out that the game fell way short of it’s expectations and ended up being another generic post apocalyptic-type game. The levels were brown or a browny shade of grey, weapons were dull and the AI was lackluster. As with most of the games I’m mentioning here, don’t believe the hype!

Xbox 360 (Microsoft) Game To Avoid: Sonic the Hedgehog

As you may have seen from the advertisements, the Xbox 360 has over 1000 titles in it’s extensive library. What it doesn’t tell you is that some of these many titles should have never left the idea phase.
For the 360 though, let’s look at one of the greatest fallen angels of gaming, Sonic the Hedgehog, and particularly his awful HD graphics debut…

Now, anyone who has played games for a few years knows that at the very least, Sonic has seen better days, and this game shows him at his very worst. So in that light, not many people were taken in by the hype, but that didn’t stop SEGA throwing money at the problem with many advertisements on TV and a large number of “exclusive” articles both online and off line.

The final product, after all the money spent, was a game that pretty much lacked every aspect of what a game should be. The controls were the worst part. Games can be saved from bad graphics and a not very good plot, but poor controls will destroy a game quickly and without mercy. Sonic’s main problem was that the controls were so bad, and the game for some reason had to take place on a series of mid air platforms with no side rails. The smallest change of direction or nudge on the control stick would send our old friend careering randomly over the side of said mid air platform: instant death and extreme controller smashing frustration ensued. In other words, avoid Xbox 360′s Sonic the Hedgehog like the plague.

Wii (Nintendo) Games To Avoid

Nintendo’s Wii is the home of the largest collection of what is affectionatly known as “shovelware”. Cheap development costs of the Wii, coupled with the huge demand for the system, has resulted in many developers jumping in to make a quick buck. For the Wii, there is a simple way to avoid these types of games (3 quick rules):

  1. Anything related to a movie – Avoid
  2. Selections of mini games – Avoid
  3. Things that just look cheap – Avoid

With these points in hand you can avoid most of the rubbish that has been shoved out the door from various companies. Some do still slip through the net, though. One of these such offenders was the total fail of a launch game, Red Steel
. Hyped for it’s first person controls using the Wii remote (sword fights, etc) it was hoped to usher in a new era for new control methods and the start of the dominance of the Wii.

Terrible graphics marred the game from the beginning. Then there was the awful, unoriginal plot and then of course, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, the controls were awful. Flimsy and unworkable, the sword fighting was a joke. Do yourself a favor and ignore Red Steel too.
